Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you call yourself project willing?
In the Bible, Luke 5 to be exact, a leper came to Jesus and said, “‘Lord, if you are willing, you can heal me.’ And Jesus said, ‘I am willing.'” We decided we were willing to help too! So…voila — Project Willing!
How long has project willing been in existence? And how long are you going to carry on this campaign?
Our project leader created Project Willing in 2021. It is our vision to continue Santa Isabel until Hansen’s disease (leprosy) no longer exists in Paraguay.
I didn't know leprosy exists! Isn't it just an old disease from the Bible?
Yes, leprosy exists, but it shouldn’t. And that’s one of the reasons we’re so insistent on helping.
Leprosy (or Hansen’s disease) is caused by a relatively uncomplicated bacteria that is treated with antibiotics. Most residents at the Santa Isabel Colony, however, not only have Hansen’s disease, but also sub-tropical diseases like elephantiasis, dengue, malaria, leishmeniasis, and mental diseases.
They are hurting and need our help.
Isn't hansen's disease Dangerous? How do you work with patients and not get Hansen's yourself?
Hansen’s disease (leprosy) is treated with antibiotics. And if you can believe it, after a few weeks of treatment, the CDC reports that many patients are no longer contagious. But the terrible stigma of the disease still exists and modern society remains afraid of close contact.
In addition to assisting at the Colony, Project Willing has future plans to engage in a public awareness campaign to help end the unscientific stigma related to this disease. Part of that campaign is encouraging use of the scientific term for the disease — Hansen’s — as opposed to referring to it as “leprosy.”
Can I choose what my donation is used for?
Of course! Head over to the donations page and choose how you’d like to donate. We have programs for infrastructure modernization, agricultural/animal welfare upgrades, needed medical supplies, and care packages. Are you willing to help?
